Monday, October 18 2021

On Friday 15th and Saturday 16th of October, the ABA Today conference was held virtually, convened by our training partner, Autism Behavioural Intervention Association (ABIA).

Congratulations to ABIA and the organising committee (headed by Dr. Erin Leif and including Learning for Life’s Chair, Mary Muirhead OAM) on a dynamic and successful ABA Today 2021 virtual conference. The Learning for Life Autism Centre is proud to have been a major sponsor.

The theme for ABA Today 2021 was Voices and Choices – we will all better understand the experiences and needs of individuals with autism when they are given opportunity to share their voices and their choices. The conference spanned three topic streams: Early Years, School and Life, so there was something for everyone who works in the disability/autism space or cares for someone on the spectrum.

Dr. Ben Gauntlett’s opening address as Disability Discrimination Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission centred on the need for autistic individuals to be supported to make choice for themselves with the dignity of risk. Commitment to this powerful human rights issue was evident across the two days of the conference.

2021 ABA Today Conference - Claire

Claire Birrell, a BCBA and a Early Childhood Clinical Consultant with L4Life, gave an interesting and informative presentation on ‘Choosing the Best School’.

Keynotes and presentations from leading international and Australian researchers, autistic adults, carers with lived experience of autism, practitioners and advocates inspired fast and dynamic chatbox connection. L4Life’s Claire Birrell presented on “Choosing the best school”, Emma Davies joined the final panel session discussing “Providing the best supports for all to rid education of systemic barriers”, and Sarah Wood was part of the abstract selection subcommittee – and they did us proud.

Bottom Row: Debra Fernando (Centre for Positive Behaviour Support); Brian Middleton (BCBA, Tennessee); Monique Cain (Everyday Autism Series, and parent advocate).

With great thanks to one of L4Life’s generous donors, all our clinical staff were provided with tickets to attend the conference, which was a wonderful professional development opportunity, filled with learning, hearing ideas and information, and listening to those with lived experiences.

In the spirit of shared knowledge, connection and collaboration, thanks again to everyone – WE CELEBRATE LEARNING.
