About ABA

What is Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA)?

Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach that assesses behaviours and works to both increase positive learning and decrease those behaviours which may be socially isolating, physically harmful or which present a significant speedbump to learning. Primarily, ABA is about helping an individual to learn or re-learn how to achieve, to live life fully, and to reach their potential.

ABA is used in a wide range of settings, such as medical, educational, mental health, rehabilitation, and health and exercise. It is recognised as one way for people on the autism spectrum to “learn how to learn”.

At Learning for Life Autism Centre (L4Life) we use ABA across a range of our support services, including:

  • Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention (EIBI)
  • School Aged Consultancy
  • Specialist Behaviour Support
  • Parent/Therapy training

ABA is the foundation of our work with the children we support. It allows us to provide individualised and targeted programs, dependant on the individual needs of the child. Read more about the Association for Behaviour Analysis Australia (ABAA) Scope of Practice.

L4Life recognises that a child’s early years are a critically important time for learning and brain development. Therefore, the planning and implementation of our programs is guided by best practice principles to ensure that each child we work with has the opportunity to live the life they choose.

Core principles of L4Life programs

Our ABA programs are:

  • individually tailored and person/family-centred
  • trauma-informed
  • delivered with a focus on enjoyment and positive reinforcement
  • neuro-affirming, socially valid and human rights based
  • practical and values based

Introducing the ABAA Scope of Practice

The Scope of Practice for Behaviour Analysts in Australia, published by the Association for Behaviour Analysis Australia (ABAA), defines the professional role, responsibilities, boundaries and exclusions that apply when practising as a behaviour analyst in Australia

This document sets out what behaviour analysts are trained, qualified and permitted to do, as well as what sits outside the scope of behaviour analytic practice. It exists to protect children, families and the wider community, and to support safe, ethical and evidence-based services.

For families and stakeholders, the Scope of Practice provides clarity about:

  • what applied behaviour analysis involves
  • how behaviour analysts assess and support behaviour
  • the importance of working within professional competence
  • when referral to other professionals is required

At L4Life, our practice is guided by this Scope of Practice. It informs how we design supports, work with families and educators, collaborate with other professionals, and ensure the services we deliver are ethical, accountable and centred on each child’s needs.

The web page provides a clear overview.  For a more detailed description, we recommend you download the pdf document available on this page.
